On Main Street in Lead, the Black Hills Mining Museum, the Official Mining Museum of South Dakota, is dedicated to the thousands of hard working men and women who were responsible for the rich 130-year history of mining in the area.

Pan your own gold, view numerous exhibits, or take a guided tour of the simulated underground mine to experience the underground the way miners did for over 100 years. The museum provides a true mining experience for both young and old.

Explore the depths

Join our knowledgeable and engaging tour guides for a captivating journey through our recreated underground gold mine, meticulously crafted by over 140 Homestake miners. This realistic exhibit offers the only comprehensive look at both early-day and modern underground mining in the Black Hills, showcasing the story of the Western Hemisphere’s deepest gold mine.

Tours last approximately one hour, start on the hour and are handicap accessible. Our friendly guides are dedicated to ensuring you have an enjoyable and educational experience.
