Tour the Mine: A Glimpse into the Past

Initially named the Gold Hill Lode, the mine was renamed for a couple of reasons – a tale as captivating as the glittering ore it yielded. Knowledgeable and entertaining tour guides will tell that story as well as help you understand what mining was like in the 1890s. As you traverse the depths of the mine, you’ll wonder at the engineering marvels of the time that allowed miners to extract precious gold and gain insights into the challenges and triumphs of mining life during this pivotal period in American history. The winding tunnels and caverns echo with stories of prospectors who once sought their fortunes in the Black Hills. Witnesses have reported glimpses of people from the past within the tunnel, making history come alive within the mine. This connection to the past is also the inspiration behind the Haunting of Keystone, an annual October event that explores the spirits lingering in the town.

Claim Panning: Adventure in the Wilderness

Join us for the Claim Tour, where you'll dig into history in two fascinating areas: one behind the mine at the historic Tycoon Mill site from 1892 and the other on Forest Service property by Little Falls off Highway 40. Our eco-friendly systems pull water from the creek, respecting fish habitats, providing not just a lesson in skills but a true understanding of the gold rush history of the Black Hills. Channel your inner prospector as you dig and pan for gold just as the miners did in that bygone era. The serenity of the wilderness and the promise of discovering your own gold nugget create an experience that transcends time.
