“Are we there yet?” The tune is a classic on family road trips, and we don’t blame you if you’re ready to switch stations.
As you explore the Black Hills and Badlands attractions, trails, and routes, keep the kiddos engaged with a Black Hills and Badlands Road Trip Scavenger Hunt. The scavenger hunt is packed with family-friendly activities, fun foods, popular sights and attractions throughout the Black Hills and Badlands that will keep your kids engaged and searching to mark off the next item on the list.
Visit the Black Hills & Badlands website and download our interactive Scavenger Hunt to your phone or tablet! THE scavenger hunt is also available to print. Whether you check off a box while visiting Mount Rushmore or cruising along Highway 385 and spot an elk, it’s a fun challenge to see which family member can rack up the most points. (And we recommend a prize for the winner – maybe a fun souvenir or an extra scoop of ice cream!)
As you visit the Black Hills and Badlands we want to share a few additional tips for families that will be spending time on the road, adventuring in the region.
Family travel tips
From long treks to short car rides in between area attractions, the journey can prove challenging when toting young ones. Here are a few tips:
-
Don’t forget snacks. Whether it’s fresh fruit or a granola bar or a sweet treat, there are many opportunities to load up and refuel along the road.
-
Bring reusable water bottles and keep hydrated.
-
Take breaks. There are a variety of hiking trails and picnic areas along popular routes in the Black Hills and Badlands to soak in the sunshine and fresh air. If it’s hot, consider a dip in Lake Pactola or Sheridan Lake.
-
Rest is important on any trip, and whether you take a night to rejuvenate at a hotel or resort with a water park or set up camp under the stars, it is a chance to experience more of the region and be fresh for the next day’s adventure. Learn more about kid-friendly lodging options.
-
While it’s summer, the weather can be fickle. We recommend bringing layers for the trip, as well as sturdy footwear in order to accommodate all weather conditions and outdoor trails. Mornings and evenings are cooler, and there is always the possibility of rain and wind when in the region. Proper clothing will enhance each experience, whether indoors or outdoors.

For younger kids, an interactive activity is sure to keep them engaged, as well as eager for the next destination on the itinerary.
