There’s nothing quite like experiencing the exhilaration of watching more than 1,300 bison thunder across the Black Hills prairie.
The 61st Annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup is Friday, September 25, 2026 and if you want to experience the most of your roundup adventure, preparation is key. Explore our tips for experiencing the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup for the first time.
What to bring?

Start by packing the essentials: a good camera and phone with extra batteries, power banks, and memory cards are crucial for capturing those jaw-dropping moments.
Dress in warm layers. The Black Hills mornings can surprise you with chilly breezes, even if the sun decides to make an appearance later. Comfortable shoes, camp chairs, or blankets are a must for a cozy viewing experience.
Don't forget tasty snacks, water, and maybe a hot beverage to sip while the world awakens around you. Binoculars will bring the distant corralling up close, and yes, sunscreen is still necessary—those rays are not hibernating!
Your Path to the Best Seat in the House

Planning the scenic route to Custer State Park is half the adventure. Located five miles from Custer, SD, and 45 miles from Rapid City, you’ll find the park an easy drive with stunning vistas. On roundup day, parking areas open at 5:45 a.m., making an early start essential. The roundup begins at 9:30 a.m. We recommend starting your journey to roundup much earlier than 5:45 a.m. If you can, we suggest heading toward Custer State Park before dawn. The park is fee-free on this special day, but roads can be busy, so patience is key. Save some stress and time by checking out shuttle services from Custer or regional tour operators to the viewing areas.
Start the Day, the Right Way

Is that sound of thunder your stomach or approaching bison? If there is a rumble in your tummy, kick off your Buffalo Roundup adventure with a savory pancake breakfast. Both viewing areas will serve fluffy pancakes and sausage with a hot beverage starting at 6:15 a.m. As you savor your meal, gaze out over the prairie and enjoy the breathtaking sunrise. The first light over the Black Hills sets a perfect backdrop, creating a serene moment before the excitement kicks in.
Live the Roundup Experience

Now that you're fueled up, it's time to settle in for the show. Keep your binoculars ready as the herd moves and have your camera set to capture that perfect shot when the buffalo make their grand entrance. Stay aware of your surroundings and keep a safe distance. Remember, it's not just about seeing—it's about feeling the raw power of nature.
Discover More Beyond the Roundup

After the roundup, head on down to the corrals for lunch and an up-close viewing of those who made all that noise. This is your chance to get close without having to be warned not to pet the fluffy cow. Or make a day out of it and extend your adventure at the Buffalo Roundup Arts Festival over at the State Game Lodge. Held the same weekend, it features a blend of food, entertainment, and local art. Feel inspired by the creativity on display or, if you’re an artist, consider showcasing your work here. While you’re in the area, explore the town of Custer. Enjoy its friendly vibe, quaint downtown shops, and eateries offering local flavors.
