Beneath the Black Hills of South Dakota is the intriguing underground world of Jewel Cave. With over 190 miles of explored passageways, Jewel Cave ranks as one of the longest caves in the world. The cave was discovered at the turn of the century by brothers passing through Hell Canyon.

With over 190 miles of documented trails, this underground environment can satiate even the most curious of humans. Brilliant color and fragile rocks reveal an amazing ecosystem not visible anywhere else. The third longest cave in the world has much to offer to a wide range of those interested in its natural glory. This resource is truly a jewel in the National Park Service.

Guided cave tours provide opportunities for viewing this pristine cave system filled with calcite crystals and other wonders such as stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, frostwork, boxwork, flowstone and hydromagnesite balloons.


Jewel Cave National Monument is located in the Black Hills National Forest. It is located just off Hwy 16, 13 miles west of Custer, SD and 23 miles east of Newcastle, WY.


Jewel Cave National Monument's surface trails & facilities are available free of charge. Fees are charged for cave tours.

Cave tours will be temporarily closed beginning Monday, October 15, 2018. The visitor center and surface trails will remain OPEN for guests. The cave tours will be suspended until mid-April 2019.


  • Tour Tickets are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • Tickets must be purchased at least ten to fifteen minutes before a predetermined tour time.
  • Teachers/educators may call the Visitor Center learn more about educational programs and academic fee waivers.
  • Call ahead for tour availability or visit Operating Hours & Seasons for current cave tour schedules.
