Feed your mind and your belly with Turtle Soup, featuring a presentation on historic Black Hills figures or events and a bowl of soup provided by Angel’s Catering.

This week, Emma Garvin presents, "Pappy Hoel."

If you’re not familiar with J.C. “Pappy” Hoel, you’ve definitely heard of his legacy - the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally!

Hoel was also a motorcycle racer, dealer and businessman. He bought a motorcycle shop in Sturgis in 1936 and the next year founded the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club. In 1938, his club held a “Black Hills Motor Classic,” which eventually turned into the rally that we all know today.

Over the years, Hoel has been recognized for his contributions to motorcycling. Aug.14, 1983 was even proclaimed J.C. “Pappy” Hoel Day in South Dakota. Both he and his wife Pearl are in the Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

Emma Garvin is the executive director of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame and has been since the summer of 2018. She started with the museum in February of that year as the assistant director.

Garvin is originally from Wisconsin and has a background in human services. For the past 15 years, she’s worked for the Girl Scouts, Habitat for Humanity, and United Way.

“It has been a joy getting to know the area and partnering with other outstanding organizations,” she says.

Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, half-off for members. Call 605-394-6923 to reserve tickets.
