1 DAY (4-5 hour) HORSEBACK ADVENTURES:

Custer State Park

Find the Buffalo! We’ll begin our adventure at a trailhead in the Custer State Park. As we cross the rolling hills of prairie, we’ll come across at least one Buffalo herd. We will be riding near the herd but at a safe distance. Your Rider-Boss has been herding Buffalo in Custer State Park for 46 years and is very aware of their habits and dispositions. This once-in-a-lifetime adventure will allow you to enjoy the beauty of Custer State Park and experience close-up views of the Buffalo on horseback.

Explore French Creek Canyon – This ride starts at the Custer State Park Horse Camp and proceeds down beautiful French Creek Canyon. During the fire two years ago, portions of the area were burned. You’ll see how nature has renewed itself over time. High Canyon walls, foliage, flowers and lots of creek crossings will satisfy your senses of sight, sound, and touch. Eventually, we’ll travel up the trail to Fisherman’s Flat and follow the Canyon Rim Trail back to the trailhead. This experience will provide a memory you won’t soon forget!

Badger Clark Cabin – We’ll mount-up at French Creek Horse Camp and ride along French Creek up to the divide near Coolidge Mt. Fire Lookout. Eventually, we’ll cross on to the Centennial Trail, switch-backing up the trail to the “Badger Hole”, Charles Badger Clark’s Cabin. Badger Clark was South Dakota’s first Poet Laureate. He wrote about South Dakota and Custer State Park, where he spent the last 30 years of his life. As we relax and enjoy a tasty lunch on the cabin porch, we’ll listen to some of Badger’s poetry in song and verse. Mounting up again, we’ll head east and drop down a steep trail to French Creek and follow it back the trailhead. This ride is a true trip down memory lane.

Forest Service Rides

Finding Nemo – This scenic Northern Hills ride begins at the trailhead and proceeds down to Box Elder Creek. Surging out of the rock is a spring that flows into the creek – keeping it running year-round and offering the best tasting water in the country. We’ll follow that Creek downstream to a trail that winds between high canyon walls back to the trailhead. The terrain is completely different here than it is in other areas of the Black Hills, providing steep slate walls of rock, tall trees, and magnificent views.

Over the Hills & Through the Draws – We’ll saddle up at Schroeder Road Area Trail Head and enjoy a nice leisurely ride through wide open meadows and between tall buttes. No high hills to climb or steep grades to go down. It’s a very comfortable ride following historic wagon trails and past the remains of old ranches. The best way to discover the beauty of the Black Hills backcountry is on horseback!

BLM Rides

Ride Back in Time - Fort Meade was the first Cavalry post in the Black Hills area. Located on the outskirts of Sturgis and in the shadow of Bear Butte, we’ll ride through where General Custer’s 7th Cavalry gathered after the battle on the Little Big Horn in 1876. You’ll learn a bit about the history of those days. Many areas still show evidence of officer’s quarters and training grounds. Our ride will include open prairie, rolling hills, ridges and even a cemetery at Fort Meade Recreation Area, quite often viewing wildlife along the way. This is truly a ride back in time.

Into the Badlands - We're in the process of obtaining an outfitting permit for Badlands National Park. Hopefully for the summer season. More later!

Now is the time to visit two of the last strongholds of the Wild West in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Call today to book your adventure and create memories to last a lifetime!
