American pride—there’s no shortage of that commodity here in the Black Hills and Badlands of South Dakota. Of course, it all starts with Mount Rushmore National Memorial, where thousands renew their patriotism every year during two days of July 4 ceremonial activities. Almost every town has a parade, and most of them have fireworks, too.

Our small towns are proud to display their love of country, each in its own distinctive way. Old West shootouts, cook-offs, car shows ‘n shines, great music, picnics, ice cream socials, farmers markets, re-enactors, arts and crafts vendors. They fit perfectly with the endless beauty, six national parks and monuments, world-class access to abundant wildlife, that the Black Hills can boast of year-round that make the region beloved by so many. Endless beauty, six national parks and monuments, world-class access to abundant wildlife, these are just a few things the Black Hills can boast of year-round that make the region beloved by so many.

This time of year we also start preparing to put on full-display something else we have in abundance in the Black Hills - American pride. We throw some of the best Fourth of July celebrations found anywhere in America. From the shrine of democracy, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, to one of the nation’s most unique and best fireworks displays at Lead’s Gold Camp Jubilee over the Homestake open cut; from the City of Presidents sculptures on every downtown corner in Rapid City, to western celebrations at the famed Black Hills Roundup Rodeo in Belle Fourche and Custer’s Old Time Country 4th Celebration. The Black Hills love hosting an American birthday party, and everyone is invited!
