Whenever I venture into the Black Hills, there is always “that” moment. You know, that moment of awe from the natural beauty surrounding you. Bringing you so deeply into the present moment, that you can’t help but proclaim, “Wow! I live here!” Whether it’s cooling-off in Pactola Lake, trekking through the Cathedral Spires, casting a line at Horsethief Lake, or cruising through Spearfish Canyon, I always find that I have one of those moments.

Can you relate? Then head to the Black Hills and take part in American Hiking’s National Trails Day on Saturday, June 2. It’s a great opportunity for you to try something new, explore our wild places, and connect with other like-minded people. I’m looking forward to participating in this historic event and doing my part to leave our trails better than we found them!

Ever since I was a young girl, I’ve been drawn to these awe-inspiring moments in nature. It was during those years that it became abundantly clear to me how vital environmental conservation is to safeguarding these transcendental experiences.

From learning the three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) in elementary school and implementing them at home, to spending my summers at Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center in northern Minnesota, to doing trail restoration in Smokey Mountain National Park for an Alternative Spring Break in college, I have always strived to be a good steward of these great places. These experiences have not only allowed me to contribute to the preservation of our precious lands, they have provided me opportunities for deep growth, deep connection, and deep understanding.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the National Trail System, will you join me in pledging to pack out trash, join a trail work project, or clean up a park on Saturday? In a single day, we can collectively improve 2,802 miles of trail—the distance across the US!
