Without a doubt, one of the best ways to experience the Black Hills is on foot. While some prefer to hike, others enjoy running. Whether it’s a 5K race or a bucket-list marathon, the Black Hills certainly offer the prettiest backdrop to your fitness goals. Here’s a rundown of our premier races in 2018:


April 7: April Fools 4-Miler, Rapid City

Held at Founder's Park, foolin' around is highly encouraged in these fun runs, which include a 1K kids run and a 4-mile run. The kids run begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by the 4-mile race at 10:00 a.m.


April 28: Dino Race 5K, Rapid City

Dinosaur Park will be the starting point for this 3.4-mile trail run through the Skyline Wilderness Area, beginning at 10:00 a.m.


May 6: WellFully Stampede 5K & 10K Run/Walk, Rapid City

Now in its 12th year, the Stampede races start in Old Storybook Park and provide enjoyable routes through Rapid City's beautiful park system.


May 11 & 12: Sturgis Beer Mile & Sturgis DAM 5K, Sturgis

Gather your drinking buddies for the Sturgis Beer Mile relay event, to be held on Friday, May 11, at 6:00 p.m. The Sturgis DAM 5K will follow on Saturday, May 12.


June 2 & 3: Mickelson Trail Marathon, Deadwood

Saturday's schedule will include a Kids Wonderful 1K and the Mickelson Fast 5K, with the marathon, half marathon, and marathon relay on Sunday.


June 20 - 24: Black Hills 100, Sturgis

If you're up for a challenge, this race series includes 100-mile, 50-mile, 50-kilometer, and 30-kilometer races originating in Sturgis.


August 17 & 18: Lean Horse 100, Custer

Held each year in August, the Lean Horse 100 series features a 100-mile race, a 50-mile race, a 30-mile race, and a 20-mile race, each run on the George S. Mickelson Trail.


August 19: Leading Ladies' Marathon & Half Marathon, Spearfish Canyon

These women-only races are held in beautiful Spearfish Canyon. With its consistent downhill grade, the marathon has been deemed the fastest course in South Dakota!


October 6 & 7: Run Crazy Horse, Crazy Horse Memorial

A Kids 1K and a Fast 5K will be held on Saturday, while the marathon, half marathon, and marathon relay will be held on Sunday.


September 22: Mount Rushmore Half Marathon, Keystone

In its inaugural year, the race will start in Keystone and will gain about 200 feet in the first mile as you climb up towards Mount Rushmore. This is a challenging course with lots of gorgeous views of Mount Rushmore and the surrounding Black Hills.
