The Black Hills region is widely known as a summer destination with its thrilling array of family attractions, world-class parks and monuments, and breathtaking landscapes. But that's not to say that winters in the Black Hills aren't as equally exciting!

For those that might be thinking there isn't much happening this time of year, we'd like to call your bluff. From incredible outdoor winter recreation (hello, snowmobiles!) and premier events in each community, there's not much downtime in our neck of the woods. Just check out this list of "5 to Try" events taking place this weekend:


1. Storybook Island's Christmas Nights of Light

Join your favorite fairy tale characters for a dazzling light display during Storybook Island’s Christmas Nights of Light! Held nightly December 1-3, 8-23, and 26-31, from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m., this is sure to excite the little ones in your life. Admission is only $3 per person. You can also ride the train for $2 per person. Hot cocoa, hot apple cider, and cookies from Eileen’s are available for an additional charge.


2. Open House Weekend at Prairie Berry Winery & Miner Brewing Company

Every weekend until New Year’s Eve, stop out to Prairie Berry Winery & Miner Brewing Company in Hill City for their Holiday Open House. They will be serving wine tastings, mulled wine samples, and free beer cocktails when you bring a canned food donation.


3. 8th Annual Black Hills Cowboy Christmas at the Historic Homestake Opera House in Lead

The popular Black Hills Cowboy Christmas concerts and dance will feature 15 performers inside Lead’s beautiful Historic Homestake Opera House this Saturday, December 9. A matinee show will be held at 2 p.m. (tickets are $30 per person) and the evening show will be held at 7:30 p.m. (tickets are $35 per person).


4. Holiday Parade in Keystone

The community of Keystone will come together for a Christmas Parade throughout the downtown area on Saturday, December 9, beginning at 6:15 p.m.


5. The Wizard of Oz at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City

There truly is no place like home as the greatest family musical of all time, the wonderful WIZARD OF OZ, twists its way into Rapid City on December 9 & 10. The entire family will be captivated as they travel down the Yellow Brick Road and beyond with Dorothy, Toto, and their friends the Cowardly Lion, Tin Man, and Scarecrow. This lavish production features breathtaking special effects, dazzling choreography, and classic songs.

Alicia is a South Dakota native with family roots in Beresford. She attended Augustana University in Sioux Falls—a year of which she spent studying in Norway and traveling throughout Europe. She acquired her degree in Sociology and International Studies. Despite her love of travel, she and her husband have thoroughly enjoyed making Rapid City their home.
