Nestled in a forested area just outside of Spearfish Canyon lies an artistic treasure the likes you’ve never seen. Dick Termes has been making his Termesphere’s since 1968 and doesn’t show any signs of stopping. Upon arriving at the Termesphere gallery you’ll notice that the buildings share a resemblance to his namesake artwork. Living and working within four geodesic domes, this is an art gallery you won’t want to miss on your trip to the Black Hills.   Termespheres fill the gallery space. In the past 32 years, Dick has explored over 160 spherical surfaces and each one is utterly unique. His standard method involves six-point perspective but he has experimented with upwards of 32-point perspective, a truly dizzying and impressive feat. His current project involves a 36” sphere that will be mounted on top of the Spearfish clock tower, only his 2nd outdoor commission. He usually paints with acrylic, but given the nature of outside installations, he has to use sign painters paint for this project. While 36” isn’t too hard to manage, his largest sphere is 90” (7.5 feet) in diameter and currently resides at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy in Douglas, Wy. Working with sign painters paint due to the outdoor conditions in South Dakota.   Mock up of the final installation. During the summer the gallery is open daily from 9-5 and occasionally Dick will take a break from working to stop by and say hello. If you’re looking for a truly unique Black Hills experience then the Termesphere gallery is definitely the place to go.
