Nemo 500 Outhouse Races: The Ultimate Game of Thrones!

By :

The tiny town of Nemo, located between Rapid City and Deadwood, is hardly more than a speck on the map. But what it lacks in population, it makes up for in good…uh, "clean" fun with their 10th Annual Nemo 500 Outhouse Races & Chili Cook-Off taking place later this month on Saturday, February 27.

The premise is simple…teams build a mobile “outhouse” with a great theme, and then push, pull or drag the structure around a timed course. The course involves a mandatory pit stop mid-race for a fire drill of sorts: each team member must run around the outhouse three times and the rider must switch places with one of the pushers, as well as a color coded toilet paper challenge. The team with the fastest time wins full glory and bragging rights for the year! The outhouse races are part of a day-long event that serves as a fundraiser with proceeds going to the local NAJA Shrine Children's Transportation Fund.

Don't have time to build an outhouse? No worries! Gather your teammates and use the Nemo Guest Ranch Loaner—just come early to decorate it with your theme, and be ready to race! (I'd recommend calling ahead to reserve it.) The race has three age divisions, plus a competition just for the kids called the shovel race—simply bring your scoop shovel to participate! Raffle tickets for the grand prize drawing of $1000.00 are on sale now and will be available at the event.

This year's event also includes a chili cook-off, taking place from 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Guests will start receiving chili at 10:00 a.m. The cook-off requires a 3-gallon minimum, with top prizes ranging from $50-$150. For more information on the cook-off, contact Kevin Kuchenbecker ( or Tony Blackmon (

Race registration opens at 10:00 a.m. and the races are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m., but come early if you want to snag a good viewing spot. The General Store at Nemo Guest Ranch will be open—ready to warm you up with hot cocoa and treats. If you’re looking for a free, family-friendly, winter entertainment option – this is it!

For entry forms and more info about the outhouse races, or for help finding Nemo, call the crew at the Nemo Guest Ranch at (605) 578-2708 or get all the details at the official race website, here.
