Imagine yourself immersed in the immaculate beauty of the Black Hills while riding on a vintage steam train like the ones that helped settle the great American West. As you glide through the wilderness on this renovated train, the breeze is wistfully blowing past you, views of Harney Peak and wildlife can be seen nearby, and you hear the bellow of the engine and the whine of the whistle as the train winds its way through the hills. Well, if this is a scene you can picture yourself in, then the 1880 Train is the ride you've been awaiting!

Located near Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Crazy Horse Memorial, this locomotive offers a western experience like no other. Hop aboard and enjoy this two-hour, relaxing 20-mile roundtrip ride between Hill City and Keystone (one-way trips are also an option). From early May to early October several trips are made daily, however, there are special events that you do not want to miss out on! Some of these events include the Mother's Day Express, Wine Express, Oktoberfest Express, Holiday Express and so much more.

On September 26th, come out and celebrate the sixth annual Oktoberfest Express. Prior to departure, you will enjoy fun and festive music by Easy Sounds of Rapid City. And on board, passengers will enjoy authentic and seasonal beer with traditional German foods. A costume contest will also be held, so make sure to wear your lederhosen!

The Holiday Express is something that the whole family will enjoy just in time for the holiday season. On this ride, each child will get the chance to meet Santa at the North Pole and receive a small Christmas gift. The 1880 Train and depot will be wonderfully decorated so be sure to take pictures, as this will be an experience you won't want to forget!

This historical steam train experience is narrated and fun for railroad enthusiasts of all ages! You can also enjoy unique shopping at the Train Depot Gift Shops and snacking at the High-Liner Snack Shoppe located at the depot in Hill City. And don't forget to stop by the South Dakota State Railroad Museum located next door to further your education on these vintage trains and the railroad!
