With 2011 little more than a day away, I was doing some year-end tasks here on the travel blog and got to looking back at all of the blog posts we shared during the past 12 months. We've shared nearly 200 posts this year and have covered topics ranging from wildlife and weather to hiking and Harleys.

Some of the things we wrote about really struck a chord with you - our readers, while other topics went over like a lead balloon. There were, however, five blog posts that easily rose to the top as far as the most popular from the past year. So, I present to you - the five most-read Black Hills Travel Blog posts from 2010.

Click on any of the bold, green titles below to jump to the original posts - several of them even include video.

  1. Northern Hills Hail Storm & Flooding (August 3, 2010)
August 3 was a crazy day in the northern Black Hills. A fast-moving thunderstorm made its way through the area, causing flash flooding and extensive hail damage. Video clips of the storm tell the story in this post.
  2. Sturgis, Pee-Wee & The Tonight Show (August 12, 2010)
Pee-Wee Herman spent several days in the Black Hills during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally this year. A film crew from The Tonight Show followed Pee-Wee around and taped this video segment for the late-night TV program with Jay Leno. Like Pee-Wee Herman or not, it is actually pretty entertaining to see him try to interact with the motorcycle crowd.
  3. Buffalo Stampede! (July 26, 2010)
This one came courtesy of a friend of the official Black Hills Facebook page. Reader, Sandy Boots, had a very cool experience in Custer State Park when the resident bison herd came galloping down the road right past her vehicle. AND...she was lucky enough to catch the whole thing on video! It's almost six minutes long, and worth watching every second. Thanks, Sandy.
  4. Mt. Rushmore & Macy's Thanksgiving Parade (October 21, 2010)
Several Black Hills area visitor industry partners and the South Dakota Office of Tourism teamed up this year to get an impressive new float into the famous Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. This blog post was the first of several about the float and gave our readers their first look at the proposed design.
  5. 2010 Legends Ride: Photos & Celebs (August 10, 2010)
The annual Legends Ride during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is a benefit ride to raise money for Black Hills area charities. This year's ride attracted more than 300 generous bikers and celebrities Lorenzo Lamas, Pee-Wee Herman and Rupert from Survivor. This photo blog post gave readers an idea of what the Legends Ride event was all about.

Thanks for reading the Black Hills Travel Blog in 2010 and we look forward to another great year in 2011. Happy New Year!

About the Author

Joe is a resident of Spearfish, S.D. He grew up in the tall-corn state of Iowa, where he developed an early interest in all things outdoors. After high school he moved to Vermillion, S.D., where he earned his bachelor’s degree in public relations and advertising.

During his college years, two things caught his attention: the beauty of western South Dakota’s Black Hills and a girl from those Black Hills. After graduating from college, Joe traveled across the country as a recruiter for the University of South Dakota. He saw the sights from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas and everywhere in between, but it was the Black Hills (and the girl) that kept drawing him back.

He and wife moved back to the Black Hills in 2008. He's an avid hiker, mountain biker and road cyclist whose future plans include trying to fit a pair of kayaks into the spare bedroom.
