Peak Travel Season begins in Black Hills

The Black Hills Visitor Information Center is located at 1851 Discovery Circle, just off of Interstate-90 - Exit 61.

The snow has melted, the roads are open and the attractions are ready for the peak visitor season to begin. Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start to summer here in the Black Hills as families and travelers from all over the world start to flood into the area for those much-anticipated summer vacations.

The Black Hills Visitor Information Center (VIC), in Rapid City, has opened its doors wide and extended its hours for the traffic that is expected to literally double overnight.

In years past, the VIC  has seen about 1,500 people come through its doors every week during the non-peak season from January through early May. Come Memorial Day weekend, that number usually jumps to right around 3,000 people per week!

During this summer visitor season, the VIC will be staffed from 8 a.m. - 7 p.m., seven days a week by members of the Black Hills, Badlands & Lakes Association (BHB&L). They're a friendly bunch of folks who know the Black

The "Exploring the Black Hills & Badlands" visitor guide is available free of charge at many local hotels, restaurants and convenience stores.

Hills region like the backs of their hands - and they're excited to help you enjoy your time here.

Last week the BHB&L staff delivered 150,000 copies of their "Exploring" visitor guide to locations all over the Black Hills and Badlands region.

"Exploring" is the comprehensive booklet that will help visitors learn more about the area and enjoy their Black Hills vacations to the fullest. It's chock-full of great visitor tips, insider info, events calendars and area maps that can't be found anywhere else.

Road construction in the Black Hills area is minimal right now with all main highways open and free of any major delays. For detailed construction alerts and road conditions, check out Safe Travel USA - it's a website that allows visitors to zoom in on any
particular section of road in the Black Hills.

Weather forecasters are predicting possible rain showers for this Saturday and then mostly sunny with temperatures in the low to mid 60s on Sunday and Memorial Day Monday.

Everything is falling into place and it's shaping up to be a great Memorial Weekend out here. So, stop by the Visitor Information Center just off I-90 Exit 61, pick up your Exploring the Black Hills & Badlands visitor guide and make the most of your time in the hills.

Happy Memorial Day to all - and have a great weekend!
