Yes, it's in Wyoming, but Devils Tower National Monument is certainly a "must-see” destination for folks vacationing in the Black Hills of South Dakota. And since it's only about 50 scenic miles from the state border, it's a great day trip that can also encompass stops in towns such as Spearfish and Belle Fourche, Hulett and Sundance.

Devils Tower, established by President Theodore Roosevelt on Sept. 24, 1906, was the first declared national monument—meaning that this year marks its 110th birthday! For centuries, surrounding Indian tribes have regarded the tower as a cultural and spiritual landmark.

Today, about 400,000 people visit each year. There are walking/hiking trails, exhibits, interpretive talks and programs available to visitors. The Tower is also a challenging and popular destination for rock climbers.
