Happy New Year! As we look forward to the year ahead, it's important to gain a complete picture of the tourism impact held in 2016. While not all numbers are reported, the current position of the Black Hills Tourism Index is at -4.21% for the year.

Diving into some of the numbers that have been reported through December, we can see that visits to Mount Rushmore National Memorial held almost dead even with those in 2015—down only 0.1% or 3,447 visitors to be exact. Minuteman Missile National Historic Site captured a significant increase in visitors in 2016 over 2015, up 33.1% with 33,276 more visitors year over year. Devils Tower National Monument also saw a jump in visits over last year, ending with 17,377 more visitors in 2016—the equivalent of a 3.6% increase.

With December stats waiting to be configured, the Deadwood Gaming Handle did see an increase in November of this year; up 1.3% over the same time frame last year. The final numbers for Black Hills Occupancy and Revenue rates are still yet to be seen for November and December.

Once the outstanding numbers are reported, we'll be able to close out the year with a final index number. Until then, -4.21% for 2016 seems to be reflective and within reason when tracking against 2015.
