BH Tourism Index: -3.83%

The actual impact of an event or decision often isn't seen until time has passed, and with the Black Hills Tourism Index updated for August's reported numbers, the impact of the 75th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is better understood.

Through August, the Index was up 1.43% over the record-setting 2015, but with all numbers in for August, it is now down -3.83%.

Tourism Taxable Sales for counties in western South Dakota were down 20% for the month and recreational visits to the region's national parks were down by 86,631 (-8.6%).

What was interesting to see is that despite the huge drop in spend and park visitation, hotel occupancy for the region was only down 1.4% compared to August 2015. The Deadwood Gaming Total Handle was down -4.7% but had seen bigger dips in April and July of this year.

Members have talked about a strong fall and staying busier longer through this season than in years past. September numbers should be coming soon, and we're interested to see if that can help make up for what was one hell of a party in Sturgis and the Black Hills last year.
