BH Tourism Index: +3.17%

(605) 355-3600

So early in the new calendar year, there isn’t much to report outside of January. All the numbers are now in for that month, and each verifies that 2016 is off to a good start. For January, the Black Hills Tourism Index is up 3.17%.

Something interesting we did see in January was while BH-area hotel occupancy, hotel revenue, taxable sales and Deadwood’s Total Handle were up, the region’s biggest national park was down. Recreational visits to Mount Rushmore were -1.8% behind 2015.

What we take from this is that January saw many (potentially) return visitors. Badlands, Jewel Cave, Minuteman Missile and Devils Tower all had a great January, Devils Tower was up 14.7% and Badlands NP was up 4%. This is consistent with the increased hotel occupancy and taxable sales—visitors did come, but not necessarily to see the iconic Mount Rushmore.
