The BH&B Board of Directors, staff and membership have been working on strategic visioning to move the Association forward. Keep reading to learn about the process, the five strategic directions and priorities, and the strategies for accomplishing them.

BH&B invited members to “invest and collaborate in the future of tourism in the Black Hills and Badlands region” at our annual meeting in October. Members had the opportunity to participate by answering the following questions:

  1. What opportunities can we see for this Association, and what do we still need to learn?
  2. What is missing from the picture so far? What’s the next level of thinking we need to address?
  3. What needs our immediate attention going forward? What bold steps might we choose?
  4. If there were no barriers, how might the Black Hills & Badlands…; what can Black Hills and Badlands…; how can Black Hills and Badlands…

BH&B’s board of directors used the information from these sessions to guide the Association’s priorities and strategies for the next one to three years.

The board met in November and were asked, “How do we focus our strategic energy and resources to provide high-quality support for our members, our employees and the communities we serve?”

They considered:

  • What have we accomplished in the last 12 to 18 months?
  • What do we want to see in place in 3 to 5 years?
  • What are our focus areas in the next 12 to 36 months?
  • What will be our specific, measurable accomplishments for the first year?

From these conversations, BH&B staff, the board and our membership were able to give guidance on the five strategic directions or priorities:

  1. Explore and expand on funding options.
  2. Regional education.
  3. BH&B will educate regional industry members about the region and our industry members.
  4. BH&B will continually provide value recognition to members and guests.
  5. Establish an innovative and strategic marketing plan.

Next Steps

BH&B staff will take the information that was gathered from the visioning session and put together an action plan to implement each priority. Throughout the implementation process, we will continue to seek feedback and guidance from the Board of Directors and our members.
