Custer National Forest
The Custer National Forest is known as the most ecologically diverse and widespread forest in the entire National Forest System. The Sioux Ranger District of this forest is located in the southeast corner of Montana and the northwest corner of South Dakota. The District is composed of eight separate units of federal land. Often described as “islands of green in a sea of rolling prairie,” visitors will find mesas of Ponderosa pine rising above the rolling grasslands. The Custer National Forest was formed in 1905 and is rich in history of the West, with preserved and protected Native American hieroglyphics and burial grounds.
