Wildlife Watching Killdeer Bird
There is a large variety of wildlife to be found in the Grand River National Grassland. Watchable wildlife includes whitetail and mule deer, antelope, coyote, red fox, prairie dogs, jackrabbits, badger and weasel. There are also many birds that live in or migrate through the Grassland. The Grand River Grassland is on the western edge of the migratory bird route. Birds that can be seen in the area include Canadian geese, ducks, golden eagle, hawks, owls, sharp-tailed grouse, upland sandpiper, killdeer, western meadowlark, red-winged blackbird, cliff swallow, horned lark and song sparrow. Reptiles can also be found on the Grassland, such as snakes, toads, frogs and lizards.

Hiking, Biking and Horseback Riding
There are numerous dirt two-track trails within the Grassland. You can also bike and hike cross-country. You can hike anywhere on the national grasslands.

There are no developed horse facilities on the National Grassland. The wide-open spaces are especially well suited for horseback travel. Please leave gates as you find them to assure that livestock grazing systems work as they are designed. Certified weed-free feed for recreational stock is required on the National Grassland.

Hunting
All areas are open for public hunting under state rules and regulations. Shooting a firearm within 150 yards of a developed recreation site or across a forest road is prohibited. Big game archery and firearm opportunities include white-tailed and mule deer, and antelope. Varmint opportunities include coyote and prairie dogs. All hunters need to be certain of hunting regulations, hunting unit boundaries and public land ownership.

Water Fun
Shadehill Recreation Area, Grand River and stock ponds offer great recreational opportunities including fishing, boating, water skiing and river floating.
