Flash back to your childhood when visiting A Museum of Childhood in Hot Springs.  Teach your children or grandchildren about how you played - when you were their age! You can take some of it home with you... Shop for vintage and collectible toys too!  There is a large variety -- all related to childhood.

Toys that children play with seem to reflect some of what is happening culturally and historically at the time they are introduced. Many toys from the 20th century were gender-specific (tools, etc for boys, dolls for girls; Dr. kits for boys, nurse kits for girls). This isn't so true anymore. More recent toys depict a variety of ethnic groups, etc.and aren't so gender specific.

In the 1950s the "new" television industry and its advertising capabilities also brought changes to the toy world. Toys representing children's tv showswere very popular (particularly Western themed products). Toy companies also found it beneficial to advertise directly to the people (children) who would be using their product in the hope they would convince mom and dad to buy the product.

Popular movies frequently licensed toys, but it was the huge popularity of the Star Wars movies and their products (beginning in the late 70s and continuing today), that created a whole new era of licensing and promotion. Almost any movie created for children now is bound to have a lot of toys and products available for purchase. Great for both children - and collectors!
