Incredible weather and premier events garnered strong shoulder season data for Black Hills area tourism. With September numbers reported—sans Wind Cave and Devils Tower—our Black Hills Tourism Index has elevated to its highest level YTD over 2014: +11.1%

Black Hills Hotel Occupancy for the month was up 5% over prior year, and Taxable Sales were again up by double-digits at 12%. The increase in visitors translated to a 7.9% increase in the Deadwood Gaming Handle, along with nearly 31% more recreational visitors to Mount Rushmore. This significant growth equated to 77,017 more visitors for the month vs. last year. In total, 326,704 recreational visitors saw America's Shrine of Democracy in September.

Badlands National Park and the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site also saw far more recreational visitors vs. September 2014. The Badlands were up 21.5%, and Minuteman Missile was up a whopping 74%. Between the two, they saw a combined total of 27,153 more visitors.

With the historic 50th Annual Buffalo Roundup in the books, October has the region much quieter - as is the norm. Nice weather throughout the month holds promise that the crazy numbers will continue.
