Established by a congressional resolution in 1983, National Travel and Tourism Week is a week of events that serves to champion the power of our industry. Celebrated this year from May 7-13, travel and tourism professionals from across the nation will promote the impactful contributions their travel markets and organizations make to their local economies and to the U.S. economy as a whole.

This year’s theme shines a spotlight on the power of travel by recognizing the millions of people who keep this industry strong: the Faces of Travel. Here is a list of local events and campaigns taking place in celebration of National Travel and Tourism Week:

  • Press Conference at Mount Rushmore National Memorial on Monday, May 8th at 2 p.m. featuring Governor Dennis Daugaard and SD Dept. of Tourism Secretary Jim Hagen.

  • Travel Rally Day on Tuesday, May 9th, from 4-6 p.m. at Main Street Square in Rapid City.

  • Visit Rapid City's "Amazing Rush" Season 2 race on May 8-9, with the finish line at the Travel Rally Day event on May 9th.

  • Visit Rapid City's "Faces of Travel" social media campaign throughout the month of May with a chance to win a hot air balloon ride for two.

  • The Custer Area Chamber of Commerce will push a "Faces of Custer" social media campaign recognizing the people who keep the industry strong.

  • The Hill City Visitor Information Center will be participating in a "Faces of Travel" social media campaign featuring selfies.

  • Black Hills & Badlands Tourism Association will feature a "Faces of Travel" social media campaign highlighting the employees of the Black Hills Visitor Information Center.
